THE COPY MECHANIC

The Copy Mechanic

Oddly enough, I'm a copywriter who doesn't like to write copy.

Interesting dilemma don't you think?

My twenty years in consulting enables me to learn new businesses and even new industries faster than almost anyone. Which is why I haven't created a niche for myself. I've written copy for real estate investors, health insurance companies, multi-level marketing, accountants, software companies all the way to roofing companies.

When I'm writing a new piece from scratch I spend a couple days studying the industry and my client, identifying what their goals are and defining our target prospect before I begin. Then there comes that point where I have to become an actor.

You may ask "ACTING" what does that have to do with writing sales copy? The simple answer is you cannot write effective copy from scratch if you are not passionate about your subject. If you are writing about someone else's business you will have to "pretend" to be passionate about it. In many respects that is the equivalent of being a consummate method actor.

But, and here is the big news, if someone who is passionate writes a sales piece, even if they have no clue what they are doing when they are writing, they will still be able to bring that passion across. Then it is a matter of fixing the copy to effectively present the message. Much easier...

Don't get me wrong, I can't turn a Yugo into a Ferrari but I can fix the transmission, change the oil, put a new set of tires on, even go so far as to replace the engine if required. So even though your sales letter selling accounting services may never stop the babes at a traffic light, it will effectively create the trust level required to get your message through their filters.
